Agile methodologies such as Scrum or Kanban are built around self-organizing, self-directed teams. High-performing agile teams work in a different way to traditional software development teams. Critical decisions are made deeper in the organization, teams have more autonomy to solve problems, and obstacles to the delivery of working software are often much more visible. This change in role for the team requires a corresponding change in the manager’s role too. Traditional management of a self-organized team is more likely to lead to frustration and eventually a return to old working habits. Instead, we introduce the role of a catalytic leader and discover how catalytic leaders manage agile teams by providing the environment for the team to learn and grow. Crucially, we learn how to support teams to deliver products on time and on budget without damaging the nascent self-organization and continual growth of the teams.

 This three week course is designed for managers with a leadership role of agile teams in an organization that is looking to become agile, or strengthen agile practices. 

 Curriculum topics include:

  • Traditional management vs catalytic agile leadership responsibilities
  • Team dynamics, motivations and positive reinforcement of actions
  • Agile approach to solving problems and accelerating self-organization
  • Leadership, sustainability and growth in the agile environment
  • The role of powerful questions in catalytic leadership
  • Understanding how agile fits within your organizational culture
  • Organizational change models that support your organization’s Agile journey
  • Understanding problem or organization context as it applies to agile change

Learning Objectives

  • Define the difference between management and agile leadership.
  • Describe how leadership practices change depending on the stages of team development.
  • Create powerful questions for leading and working with agile teams.
  • Describe Kotter’s 8 Steps to Organizational Change.
  • List the three intrinsic motivators and how they can be applied to agile teams.

Note: We recommend Agile Delivery Methods (II861) prior to taking this course.

This course can be applied to the UBC Associate Certificate in Agile Leadership.

Course Format

Handouts and course outline will be available through our LMS - Moodle. You will receive login details to moodle one day before the course start date. There will be 14 hours of live online class sessions, delivered in either two session 9am-5pm or 3 sessions 8:30am-1pm. You should expect to spend 6-10 hours of study time to complete the quiz and assignment.
